What is actually in a healthy protein shake?
Not every protein shake is healthy. Many bottled and bar-made shakes lean on added sweeteners, syrups and thickeners to hide the taste of low-quality protein, and a drink that advertises 30g of protein can still carry more sugar than a dessert. When you are choosing a healthy protein shake, three things matter: the protein source, the sugar and the ingredient list.
How to judge a protein shake
- Look at the protein source. Whey protein and Greek yogurt are complete proteins that dissolve cleanly into a blend. Ours use both.
- Check the sugar. Fruit brings natural sugar, and that is fine, but it should not be the main ingredient. Ours list sugar per serving: 10g in Chelsea’s Cookies & Cream and PB Powerhouse, and 25g in Peak Performance, which uses pineapple, banana and dates for post-workout carbohydrate.
- Read the whole ingredient list. Ours are short and recognizable: fruit, yogurt, whey, nut butter, almond milk or coconut water.
- Match the shake to the moment. A shake after training needs protein and carbohydrate. A shake between meals needs protein and fewer carbs.

Is a meal replacement shake right for you?
A meal replacement shake is meant to stand in for a full meal, so it needs enough calories, protein and fiber to keep you going for hours. Our protein shakes run 250 to 280 calories, which makes them excellent after a workout or as a substantial snack, but lighter than most people need for a full meal.
- After training: Peak Performance gives you 25g of protein and 35g of carbohydrate to refuel.
- Between meals: Chelsea’s Cookies & Cream or PB Powerhouse deliver 20 to 23g of protein for 250 calories.
- When you need a full meal: pair a shake with a Teriyaki Protein Bowl (350 calories, 28g protein) or choose a bowl on its own.
If you rely on meal replacements for a medical or dietary reason, talk to a registered dietitian or your doctor about what fits your needs. We can share the full nutrition information for any blend on request.
